The Côte d’Azur, the longtime getaway of European millionaires and the sun-worshippers who love them, has never hurt for visitors. But many of the resorts on this exclusive coastal stretch have undergone a style overhaul in recent years, in a bid to attract the younger jet set. La Voile d’Or in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the exceptions: you won’t find any minimalist interiors here. The 45-room hotel also can’t claim the opulence of the legendary Grand Hotel du Cap-Ferrat nearby. No, the tastefully understated La Voile d’Or trades on location, location, location — in this case, on a secluded cove with dramatic views of the sea and access to a tiny beach village that could be out of a storybook.

The traditional décor, which gives a nod to Italian palatial style, is reassuringly classic, and the guest rooms are spotless, large, and wonderfully private. The muted color scheme, all cream, beige, and dusty shades of rose and green, is calming, and fresh floral arrangements and luxurious linens lend a romantic air to each guest room. Satellite television is readily available, though there’s a good chance you won’t be turning it on if you’ve booked a room with a private terrace over the Mediterranean or the sailboat-dotted harbor (infinitely preferable to the hit-or-miss garden view accommodations — if you’re going to splurge on the French Riviera, do it right).

La Voile d’Or’s petite private beach and pair of swimming pools — facing out to sea, of course — are aesthetically pleasing spots for sunbathing and gaping at the lavish yachts cruising into the cape. The hotel’s main terrace provides the best vantage point at sunset; the restaurant, serving traditional French Mediterranean cuisine, affords harbor views. Cocktails under the stars, at a table for two straddling the pool and the sea, shouldn’t be missed.

How to get there: La Voile D'Or is 18 kilometers from Cote D'Azur Airport (NCE). Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
