Sometimes low-concept is better than high. Las Ranitas is a simple little beachside hotel in Tulum, itself a sleepy coastal town that harkens back to an older version of the Mexican beach vacation. There’s no famous designer, no genre-shattering architectural statement being made, and certainly no aspirational lifestyle being pushed at you by the hotel’s friendly staff — unless the lifestyle of your aspirations is one of semi-permanent siesta on a postcard-perfect beach. In which case, good on you; you’ve found the right place.
A little more about the setting: Tulum is basically a one-road town set between a vast, protected jungle and the Caribbean Sea. There’s little electricity — sun and wind provide the power at Las Ranitas, as at most places in Tulum — and the street pretty much rolls up at sunset. The trade-off for the lack of nightlife is a lack of nightlife — the gangs of new-to-the-party revelers, drunk off all the sugar in their bottomless margaritas, generally don’t venture out here. Not that it’s totally untouristed. A fairly dense smattering of small-scale hotels populates the town and the long white-sand beach, and plenty of day-trippers come for Tulum’s spectacular oceanside Mayan ruins. But if it’s a crowd, it’s a pretty mellow one.
And that’s the crowd — the mellow one — that Las Ranitas is after. The rooms are unostentatious and perfectly comfortable, full of cool white stone and tile, furnished (tellingly) with one bed for the daytime and another for night, fully awash in light. Every room comes with a terrace, and every terrace comes with a hammock and beach chairs. Most also have stunning views of the Caribbean, just beyond that palm-lined white-sand beach.
A simple beachside restaurant — set on a deck with palm trees growing through it — turns out fresh, local fare, and the bar supplies cocktails to sunbathers down on the beach. A little collection of towel-topped daybeds and beach loungers, some of them set beneath rustic wood-and-canvas shades, makes it more or less impossible to resist spending the afternoon by the water. About the closest Las Ranitas comes to excess is the pleasant tree-ringed pool. It’s hardly necessary given the proximity to such an inviting beach, but if that’s their biggest folly, we’ll take it.
Please note: Las Ranitas will be closed for renovations beginning April 1. The hotel is expected to reopen in November.
