What I liked:

Cooler temps, as it was up in the mountains. A bit of a hike down to the beach: never got up in time for the free shuttle, but always seemed to have cabs available.

Pool was nice, but windy. Gorgeous views of the mountain and the rest of the island.

Decent rooms (huge pseudo villas, #12 had a great view of the sea/sunset). Large, great beds. Overuse of rattan, but no surprise given the locale.

Bathrooms need an overhaul and better products.

Food was competent. High-end cruise ship, I guess. I don't really want or expect tuna tartare when I'm in the Caribbean, but it's probably, sadly, easier to FedEx in fish than do it sustainably and locally.

Staff couldn't have been nicer.

Beautiful grounds.

What the hotel could do better:

The excess of Brits well into their dotage was charming for a little and annoying for the most part. Thankfully, they were in bed by 9pm.

Hotel was otherwise charming, and an interesting alternative to the beachfront options. I'd def do it for a few nights, then prob split the trip with something on the beach.

Hotel Description

Montpelier Plantation’s history goes back centuries, but it only became a hotel in the 21st century. Now they’re making up for lost time — what was, not all that long ago, a disused and overgrown sugar plantation is now the Montpelier Plantation and Beach, one of the top options on the delightfully under-traveled Caribbean island of Nevis. And you can’t really hold its newness against it — on the contrary, the only thing better than a luxe renovation is a new build.

The result is a resort that’s a bit more contemporary than the West Indies norm, the dozen and a half guest rooms pared-down and open to the breeze. And the clean look is a good one for Nevis, some unfettered space for contemplating the breeze and a dose of the quiet life being largely what one comes for.

There’s a fair bit of attention paid to the food and wine, which is often a weakness in Caribbean resorts; this focus may be another benefit of starting fresh. And adding to the privacy of it all is the fact that the Montpelier Plantation and Beach stands not on the beach, but in the hills a few miles from the coast. Thus it earns high marks for peace and quiet, for which a short shuttle ride to the Hotel’s private beach is a small price to pay.

Please note: Montpelier Plantation & Beach is closed from the beginning of August until early October.

How to get there:

If you fly to St. Kitts, a Montpelier representative will meet you at the airport upon your arrival and assist with the ferry transfer to Nevis. There are two ferry options to Nevis: private/semi-private water taxi or the public ferry. Due to limited public ferry schedule we advise you to consider the private water taxi for a swift and easy transfer. Please contact the hotel for more information so that we can offer you any assistance with your transfer and advise you of pricing and specials.

Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
