What I liked:

I stayed at Mount Nelson 2 years ago, and wanted to go back to re-live the charm of the romance of the place.

The style of the rooms is beautiful, the best place by far is the lounge with the french windows.

What the hotel could do better:

The main reason we went back is to experience the morning in the lounge for breakfast, while beautiful light streams through the french windows. To our great disappointment, the breakfast had been moved to the Oasis Bistro, which felt worse than being in a Sheraton.

We went for a drink at the planet bar, ordered a Red Martini, but was brushed off by the bar tender as 'we don't do that here'. A very non 5-star answer. Especially since every time I had ordered it there before. And not even pointing that out to the bartender changed the attitude.

Although on the second night, one of the old staff made sure we get our 'breakfast in the lounge' after a bit of convincing, it took an hour to get it, and the plates smelled of egg. Not very appealing when you're trying to have fresh fruit.

Being a tablet plus member, we were promised a refreshed fruit plate in every room, it was there on the first day. Fresh cut fruit. But whatever we didn't eat, was left on the second day. Not refreshed, not even cleared.

We were upgraded to 2 junior suites which was nice, but no one told us that would be in another building where you have to walk through the parking every time to get to the hotel. It would've been better to keep our existing rooms in the main building. Especially when all we could hear is the reverse beeping of delivery trucks.

Hotel Description

This hundred-year-old British Colonial hotel is by most accounts the place to stay in Cape Town; at the foot of Table Mountain, surrounded by nine acres of lush gardens, the Belmond Mount Nelson was already the grande dame of the South African hotel scene when a young Winston Churchill came to stay while covering the Boer War as a correspondent for the Morning Post.

That was in 1899 — we’ve seen top hotels go wrong almost overnight, and it’s a select few that maintain excellence for an entire century. But what’s remarkable about the Belmond Mount Nelson is that it’s in quite possibly the best shape of its life. Interiors, though antique, are in top form, their lush fabrics and delicate furnishings looking every bit as elegant as some of London’s fashionable Georgian townhouse hotels. Guest rooms have been updated with a few nods to modernity — high-speed internet access has finally made an appearance — but it’s the traditional luxuries that make an impression, like the antique canopy beds and the spacious and well-stocked bathrooms.

The facilities list is comprehensive, offering everything a top resort should, from tennis and squash to spa treatments and personal trainers. The signature Cape Colony restaurant serves modern South African cuisine, and afternoon tea in the lounge is one of many Anglophile traditions; it seems that dreadful business of the 1890s has been largely forgiven and forgotten.

How to get there:

The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is about a 20-minute drive from Cape Town International Airport. Heavy traffic occurs in the morning from 7:00 to 8:30 and in the afternoon from 16:00 to 18:00. There is generally a 30-minute delay to and from the airport around these times. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
