If you’re not impressed by Mukul Resort & Spa, it might be time to turn in your passport. This is quite simply one of the finest beach hotels on the planet: as gorgeous, as stylish, as well-designed, and simply as pleasurable as these things come. And by “these things,” we mean spare-no-expense eco-resorts on vast and stunning expanses of tropical coast. It’s a rarefied niche, one whose hotels very rarely disappoint, and Mukul is no exception.
Mukul’s particular vast and stunning tropical coast spans some 1,670 acres along Playa Manzanilla, where a sliver of surf and sand forms a border between the emerald-green water and the lush cliff-walled coves that rise into the rainforest. Rooms are either on the beach (the beach villas) or three hundred feet above, in the canopy (the bohios). Views of the ocean come standard.
At a sprawling six hundred square feet, the smallest rooms in the resort are the bohios. That’s not small, if you’re wondering. They come with travertine marble bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows framing the ocean views, sweeping wooden decks with private plunge pools, and a veranda with a day bed. At every level, the furnishings — carved teak tables, sugarcane twig headboards, rum barrel staves, plus quirky pieces like chandeliers made from mussel shells — have all been custom made by Nicaraguan artisans. Opt for a beach villa and the bathroom comes with two vanities, one facing the ocean and one facing the garden. That garden contains a second “secret” garden within it, tucked away in the foliage, and that mini-garden contains yet another secret: an outdoor shower, just in case the indoor “monsoon shower” and soaking tub get old. Space prohibits us from detailing the pleasures of the only occasionally bookable compound known as Casona Don Carlos, but suffice to say the 20,000-square-foot private residence of Mukul’s founding family has a lot going on.
Whichever room, villa or compound you choose, you’ll be treated like a guest of the family. While plenty of other hotels in the region offer tours of the old colonial city of Granada, Mukul’s version of that excursion includes a private visit to the Pellas family home, a 1926 Art Nouveau mansion in the heart of Granada’s Central Park. Or you could opt for a rum distillery tour, for which you’re whisked off by helicopter to the Pellas’ plantation, where you’re greeted with a cocktail and treated to meals cooked by a personal chef. It goes on like this — visiting their private lake house, helicoptering to the Cerro Negro volcano for a spot of “ash boarding,” playing golf on the property’s oceanside 18-hole course…
Perhaps most remarkable of all, these have all been designed with a careful attention to sustainability. Before a single shovel-tip hit the ground, they spent six years doing environmental studies to determine how to minimize the resort’s impact. It turns out that with enough effort (and financing), something like a stunning 18-hole golf course on the coast can be environmentally friendly. All of which means that, at least if your pursuit of leisure is equally well-financed, you can stick around as long as you want, guilt-free.
