What I liked:

I liked the location and the feeling that we had a safe, cool place to retreat to in a wild-feeling city.

What the hotel could do better:

Front desk service is super defensive and rude.

Hotel Description

We mostly know the Accor group for their business-luxury chain, Sofitel, and for their distant American cousin, the ultra-budget Motel 6. Both fine institutions, as far as they go, but neither one focuses on individual character and architectural distinction quite like the MGallery collection, Accor’s new luxury boutique line. That’s half of the context in which you’ll find the Palazzo Caracciolo; the other half, of course, is Naples, a city which, in spite of its size and its unique personality, has got plenty of room for a few more hotels like the high-end, high-design Palazzo.

Which, incidentally, is a bona fide palazzo, ancestral home of the Caracciolo family — hence the location in the city’s scenic historic heart, and the unique contours of the building itself, its rooms and suites carved out of the existing floor plan rather than laid out along double-loaded corridors. Inside they’re modern, perhaps surprisingly so, showing that distinctly Italian flair for contemporary design in traditional spaces.

The Caracciolo also shows a distinctly Italian appreciation for luxe comforts. We’re not big believers in the star-rating system, but this is the epitome of the four-star: plush rooms, fine cooking, and if it lacks a pool or a spa or whatever it is that makes a five-star these days, that’s just the price you pay for a location in an ancient building in Naples’s old city center — a price that’s well worth paying, as atmosphere might ultimately be the key to this classic city’s appeal.
