As Caribbean hotel experiences go, this is just about as far from the big, mass-market resorts as it’s possible to get. Instead it’s a small collection of extremely (yet casually) luxurious Caribbean villas, created by one of the masters of contemporary Dutch design, set at the edge of a tiny Caribbean island amidst some of the world’s best diving. It’s a niche audience, to be sure, but for design-obsessed divers looking for a hotel at the high end of the market, Piet Boon Bonaire is a fantastically rare find. And even if you just want a maximally luxurious, minimally fussy Caribbean getaway — and could care less about the provenance of the furniture, or the condition of the local seahorse population — you’ll still find these villas more than adequate.
The word “villa” gets thrown around somewhat liberally in the hotel world, but here they really mean it. The smallest of the nine villas spans well over 3,000 square feet, including four bedrooms, a very well-equipped kitchen, and an open-air living room with panoramic views of the sea. From there it only gets more luxurious, with private pools and furnished seaside terraces as you go up the scale. At every level, the accommodations feel like live-in showrooms for the best Piet Boon design pieces, with an abundance of natural materials — from the polished stone floors to the sculptures made from sea-bleached tree branches — keeping it all in harmony with the surroundings. In fact the boundary between the villas and the coastal scene outside is often vanishingly permeable, with indoor and outdoor spaces blending together and sea breezes filling the already airy interiors.
The villas are especially well-suited to travelers with an independent streak — the sort who, in a different kind of hotel, might hang the Do Not Disturb sign on the door from check-in to check-out. At Piet Boon there’s a chef to cook your party a seafood feast if you want it, and a staff to tidy up and help you make excursions around the island, but for those so inclined, it’s also possible to largely take care of yourself. The kitchens are spacious and well-equipped, and there are laundry facilities and dish washers in every villa. That’s not to say you have to do your own laundry and dishes, not at all, but if you want a place to toss a wet swimsuit or stash a dirty dish, it’s nice to have the option. In short, it’s easy to feel at ease here, and to make yourself at home — a feeling worth having, at any price.
Please note: Piet Boon Bonaire has a four-night minimum.
