What I liked:

Everything, such a pleasant surprise! I really like the way that they don't fill the place up so you feel like you have the place almost to yourself

What the hotel could do better:

Nothing, had a wonderful stay!

Hotel Description

It wasn’t so very long ago that wine snobs were still scoffing at Portugal’s output — port was considered to be something rather different from proper wine, and the idea of a holiday in the Portuguese wine country was virtually unheard of. How quickly things change. A boom in the reputation of Portuguese wines has led, like clockwork, to a boom in the attractiveness of Portuguese hospitality — a trend that’s particularly evident in the Douro Valley, in establishments like this winery-turned-hotel, the Quinta da Romaneira.

From the outside it’s absolutely classic, a traditional Portuguese wine estate, complete with sprawling grounds along the river’s bank. Once inside, however, it’s clear we’re entering a new era. The French owners have seen fit to outfit the interiors in an exceedingly stylish modern style, but one that’s lent added character by the inclusion of an eclectic collection of furnishings and objects from around the globe, and from a variety of time periods.

The suites, then, are chic and clean-lined and yet still full of personality, and lack for nothing in the way of modern comforts (with the notable exception of telephone and internet connections — here, in this remote valley, you’re meant to shut out the outside world). There are just nineteen of them, which lends a certain intimacy to the atmosphere — as does the dining experience, where each meal, with a set "surprise" menu, is served at a different location around the villas and the estate. On its small scale it’s as luxurious as many a big five-star hotel — with, one hopes, a bit more character, which means more to remember.

Please note: Quinta da Romaneira operates seasonally, closing in November and reopening in mid-March.

How to get there:

Quinta da Romaneira is located approximately ninety minutes' drive from Porto Airport (OPO). Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
