What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

It’s quite close to the Common, that much is true, but if a place called the Revere Hotel Boston Common has you expecting some creaky old b&b from the days of the American Revolution, think again. Fresh off a nine-figure renovation, this hotel is anything but dated. The visual style is decidedly contemporary, even a touch futuristic — from the gigantic abstract sculpture in the center of the gleaming white lobby to the ambient emerald-green light that bathes the cocktail bar — and in terms of comfort and functionality, it’s just as up-to-date as it looks. And functionality is an important point for a hotel whose location puts it within walking distance of both Newbury Street and the Financial District. That is, it’s a prime location for leisure and business travelers alike, and the hotel itself has plenty to offer for both.

On the sexier side of the spectrum, there’s a glassed-in rooftop pool surrounded by skyscrapers, and next to it a leafy outdoor lounge with views of the city. To sit in the shade of a curtained-off cabana on a warm night, with a surprisingly good tropical cocktail in hand, is to feel far indeed from the day’s work. Yet there’s also a very well-equipped 24-hour business center and more meeting space than you’re likely to ever need just downstairs, for those unfortunate souls whose evening work involves more than the clinking of glasses.

The guest rooms themselves are intuitively designed, which is just a fancy way of saying you won’t be tearing apart the furniture in an attempt to find an electrical outlet. Oversized work desks and free high-speed wi-fi also make it easy to get some work done, while private balconies and adjustable Sleep Number beds make it equally easy to relax.

Rustic Kitchen, the main restaurant, doubles as a studio for a cooking show (called, straightforwardly enough, “The Cooking Show”), and it’s as attractive in person as it is telegenic. Whether for a pre-theatre meal with the family or a casual business dinner, it’s a seductive place, with an atmosphere that’s characterful without crossing the line into faux-rustic kitsch. There’s nothing terribly radical about any of it, but at least in Boston’s typically conservative hotel scene, there are times when the Revere seems almost revolutionary.
