Golf is the reason for the Lodge's existence. And it is nearly impossible to find fault with CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort, as a golfer's resort. The course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is a 7,169-yard championship course with all the conveniences one would expect, including a clubhouse, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, a top-notch pro shop, and a 5,000-square-foot spa.

But non-golfers may also find cause to visit the Lodge. San Martin is just a half-hour's drive from San Jose, and a stone's throw away from some truly average hotels. It would be possible, if one found oneself visiting Silicon Valley, to check into a perfectly normal business hotel, and surround oneself with dreary accommodations and mirthless conventioneers.

At CordeValle, you will not check into an ordinary hotel room, but into a Bungalow, a Villa, or a Fairway Home. And looking around the Dining Room, you will find your fellow travelers have come to get away, to relax (though, perversely, they do so by playing golf). No one is here for a tech expo or a trade show - they are here purely for escape and enjoyment.

The Lodge's accomodations come in three varieties - the predominant plan is the seven hundred square foot Bungalow, though if more space is required, there are the Villas, at 1,100 square feet, and the 3,100 square foot Fairway Homes. All are rather elegant, with a degree of intentional stodginess, befitting the game's traditional bent. A certain homey comfort is emphasized, with king beds and goose down comforters, cordless phones, stocked refrigerators, DVD players, flat-screen TVs, and, above all, space. Space for walk-in closets, double vanities, fireplaces, whirlpool bathtubs.

And for those who enjoy the game of golf, this is, remember, a championship course by a legendary designer. The 36,000 foot clubhouse includes the restaurant, the bar, locker rooms, 5,000 square foot spa, as well as boardrooms and a ballroom, with data connectivity and audiovisual equipment for fully functioning business meetings.

This being Northern California, there is also a winery on the premises, with a private vineyard associated. And the Spa at CordeValle is an attraction in itself, in a traditional vein, combining modern ideas on health and beauty with "ancient European traditions like Kur." Overall, a luxurious place, far from the business hotel experience, but so close to the heart of Silicon Valley. Obviously outstanding for a golfing getaway, the Lodge is quite suitable for the non-golfer as well.

How to get there: CordeValle is a 30 minute drive south of San Jose and 45 minutes north of the Monterey Peninsula. The closest airport is Mineta San Jose International Airport. Contact customerservice@tablethotels.com for directions.
