To put it simply, Ruschmeyer’s is a retro Montauk summer camp for grown-ups, cinematically styled and positively dripping with nostalgia. Generally we try to avoid pigeon-holing our readers, but let’s just say for the sake of argument you’re a person with nuanced but ultimately basically favorable views of the oeuvre of Wes Anderson, and you’re reading this on a Mac somewhere in gentrified Brooklyn, and you’re looking for an easy summertime escape from the city, someplace a little lower-key but not without an element of nightlife; you might want to save yourself some time and just scroll your cursor over to that big green button, for this is your place on Long Island.

The hotel’s central lawn, known as the Magic Garden, serves as the daytime social hub. It’s decked out with just about every summer camp set-piece one can think of, from teepees and a tree swing to fire pits, picnic- and ping-pong tables. As the sun goes down, the lawn takes on the flattering glow of paper lanterns and holiday lights strung through the branches of the trees.

In good weather, the lawn is where most of the meals are taken, though there’s an indoor venue as well. Fortunately the food is several steps up from typical camp fare. An offshoot of The Smile in Manhattan, the kitchen produces irresistibly summery dishes like minted sugar snap peas, scallop crudo and classic lobster rolls. If this kind of stuff works at a trendy restaurant in NoHo (and it does), it’s somehow even better at a lantern-lit picnic table with wood smoke in the air and a breeze off the lake. After dinner, the action moves to the Electric Eel, and the party goes on until the wee hours of the morning, at least on weekends. Breakfast, included in the rate, is mercifully served until noon.

Frankly, the guest rooms are almost an afterthought, though they do nothing to spoil the magic of the place. Arranged in a semi-circle around the lawn, they look every bit the part of camp cabins they’re modeled after. They’re nearly as small, too, topping out at 230 square feet at the highest end. Still, while quite spare, they’re not without their pleasures. All but the most basic rooms come with a hammock and a charcoal grill, and at every level the (private) bathrooms are spacious and stocked with high-end bath products. Frette linens line the bed, and there’s free wi-fi for those misguided souls who can’t manage to unplug even for a weekend at summer camp.
