In a location as picturesque — and as unspoiled — as Tasmania’s Coles Bay, it would be criminal for a brand-new luxury resort to be anything less than completely green. Fortunately this is one statute Saffire Freycinet doesn’t have to worry about running afoul of. We’ll stop short of enumerating the details, but suffice it to say this wave-shaped string of modern luxury villas, with its manta-ray-shaped mothership of a central lodge, is just about as low-impact as it’s currently possible for a human settlement to be.

On to the fun stuff. The play of the evening sunlight on the Hazard Mountains is alone worth the price of admission, and thrown in to the deal is a sprawling, sleek luxury suite, one whose low-reflectance window glass is specially engineered to render the views with the utmost sharpness. The style is modern, yet subtle enough to recede into the background a bit — architecture junkies will take note, to be sure, but as finely crafted as they are, they knowingly play second fiddle to the Tasmanian landscape.

Beneath that crisp modernist veneer they’re absolutely traditional luxury suites, with all the necessary comforts accounted for, from soaking tubs to high-tech gadgetry. The same is true of the rest of the resort — under the undulating roof of that majestic lodge building is a high-end restaurant where Hugh Whitehouse serves the finest Tasmanian meats, fish and produce. The spa and accompanying gym are fully equipped, and in the outdoor excursions, the sky is essentially the limit, from sailing and quad-bike tours to a day on the private Schouten Island, shared with the local residents: sea birds, seals and penguins. Safe to say there’s not another one quite like it anywhere.
