We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

First, a point of clarification: San Carlo Suite is in fact three suites, not just the one, but if you were hoping for something more like a serviced pied-à-terre than a regular old hotel, you won’t be disappointed. Set in a fifteenth-century townhouse on Via del Corso, the hotel is as intimate as these things come, as full of warmth and unaffected charm as it is luxurious — and it’s plenty luxurious. The interiors of the old building have been renovated in a warm contemporary style — deep soaking tubs placed in immaculate bathrooms (or set in the corner of the bedroom), the walls hung with the proper glowing screens and fitted with high-tech fireplaces, the beds covered in sheets so silky you could play a game of air hockey on them. In short, San Carlo has all the character of a three-room hotel, but they haven’t scaled down the comfort level.

Another thing that makes it work as a sort of upgraded pied-à-terre: it’s right in the middle of town. Via del Corso is one of the city’s best promenades, and a stroll is as much an exercise in people-watching as it is in, well, exercise. Back in the fifteenth century, when it was one of the few wide, straight roads in town, it was used as a horse racing track. Today the local entertainment is a little mellower: excellent shopping, especially around the corner on Via Condotti, and some fine cafés and restaurants. The point is to use the hotel as a base from which to explore, but that doesn’t mean you won’t want to spend some time on the premises. In the quiet little lounge you’ll find a free open bar and all-day snacks, while the windows in the room make excellent, quiet vantage points for watching city life play out against a classic Roman backdrop.
