You don’t go to Cape Cod to find the latest, edgiest experiments in boutique-hotel boundary-pushing. You do, however, like to see at least a passing acknowledgement of the new, personality-driven, design-conscious era. (At least if you’re us you do.) At Sea Crest Beach Hotel you get more than a passing acknowledgement: fresh off a large-scale renovation, this classic Sixties seaside hotel has slipped effortlessly into the twenty-first century.
This doesn’t mean forced whimsy or an excess of nautical-themed kitsch. The Sea Crest’s appeal isn’t in the branding, but in the simple pleasures of the Cape. It’s simply that a keen contemporary eye has been brought to bear on the redesign, and in its new incarnation it’s modern enough to appeal to a new generation, but not so edgy as to alienate the old guard.
The best views, naturally, are from the sea-facing rooms, but they’re by no means obligatory. In any category you’ll find the comforts quite up to snuff, and from anywhere in the resort you’ll be hard pressed to choose between the swimming pools and the white sand beach. A handful of restaurants (some of them seasonal) serve updated versions of New England classics, with a natural emphasis on seafood. All in all it’s still something of a throwback to a simpler time, but without turning into a nostalgia trip. More beach towns could use a place like this.
