What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

For a sensible name you could do a lot worse than Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa. It’s an exemplary showcase for Sofitel’s contemporary, locally inflected, French-cosmopolitan style; it’s located in the laid-back, picturesque seaside town of Essaouira (née Mogador), two hours west of Marrakech on the Atlantic coast; it’s practically within putting-range of a Gary Player–designed golf course; and if that doesn’t already sound like a sufficiently relaxing escape from the crush of the city, the name also reminds us that the hotel is home to an exquisite spa, where that signature Sofitel sheen gets even a little bit glossier.

Furnished balconies, views of the golf course and separate dressing areas come standard in every spacious guest room, all of them a blend of contemporary furniture and Moroccan details like wooden moucharabieh latticework. Everything of course gets larger in the suites, not least the views, which widen beyond the golf course to encompass the ocean or hotel gardens, too. By the time you get to the villas, you’ve got private pools and gardens as well as personal butler service, and a choice between the golf-appropriate Lacoste villa with its own putting green, or the Mogador villa with a cozy fireplace in the dining room.

The scale of the hotel’s facilities — three pools, four restaurants, three bars, several thousand feet of business, conference and event space — speak to the growth of Essaouira as an emerging Moroccan destination. Not that it’s in danger of losing its soul. The gorgeous Atlantic beaches are still right here, the whitewashed walled city still rises as dramatically from the rocky coast, and as a busy working fishing port it continues to bring to market (and to local dinner plates) some of the country’s best seafood. As elsewhere in Morocco, the town has long had a French connection. The city’s ramparts and wide, European-style streets were designed, at a sultan’s behest, by a French architect in the mid-18th century, resulting in an old town that’s more navigable than the famously warren-like medinas elsewhere. And when it comes to design, French-Moroccan fusion is an excellent look.
