We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

Playa del Carmen is something of a goldilocks zone on the Riviera Maya — miles more refined than the world of margarita-soaked mega-resorts up north in Cancún, yet not so mellow that they roll up all the sidewalks come siesta-hour. And it’s also the sort of place where a smallish hotel called the SOHO Playa — a little bit of London or New York, but with sandals, a tan and communal rooftop yoga — makes perfect sense, even if it sounds like it shouldn’t.

Though it’s only a few hundred meters from the beach, SOHO Playa’s setting is actually a bit more urban than someone new to Playa del Carmen might expect. The hotel is set in the North End, an area liberally sprinkled with upscale international restaurants, and walking around the neighborhood is as much a part of the experience as a stroll down by the beach. In short, even for Playa del Carmen, the area has an especially cosmopolitan flavor.

The rooms, meanwhile, have some decidedly local elements. Most of them come with balconies and handmade hammocks done by Mayan artisans — snoozing in a hammock being a venerable tradition on the Riviera Maya. And the artworks in the rooms are as local as can be; they were painted by an artist who used the Master Suite as a studio. (Poke around and you may find some paint splotches.) Still, Molton Brown bath products and feathery, high-end bedding keep it all from veering too far toward the rustic.

It’s in the munchies department, however, where what SOHO Playa calls its “haute hippie” sensibility really shines. For lunch, perhaps, it’s mango guacamole or ceviche and a smoothie by the rooftop plunge pool, but if the extensive veggie options start to feel the tiniest bit oppressive, there’s a fine restaurant as well. The chef’s specialty: pâté with red onion and red wine marmalade, made from a classic Viennese recipe. The detox menu will always be there tomorrow.

How to get there:

The hotel is located 40 miles from Cancún International Airport (CUN). The hotel can arrange a private transfer for up to 2 people at a cost of $130, round-trip. Taxi service costs approximately $90, one-way. There is also a shuttle departing every 30 or 40 minutes from the airport, which costs $30 per person and cannot be booked in advance.
