Gibraltar is a small place, not even three square miles — and what with that big rock taking up most of the surface area, there’s just not a lot of prime real estate left for a hotelier to develop. One solution: build a two-hundred-million-dollar super yacht, park it permanently in the marina, and use it as a luxury hotel. That’s what Sunborn did, and it came off surprisingly well.

To be fair, the Sunborn Gibraltar is really more a purpose-built hotel than it is a yacht, like a glassy modern tower-hotel turned on its side. That it floats turns out to be more or less incidental, aside from the fact that they don’t have to worry too much about yet another high-rise going up along the waterfront and blocking out all the sunlight. Instead of cramped ship cabins, the guest rooms are spacious and airy and full of light, with all the comforts one expects on dry land — high-pressure showers in the marble bathrooms, king-size beds with good downy pillows and high-end sheeting, and floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views. Add to all this a private balcony or terrace for taking in the sunshine and sea air, and it’s leagues better than the mass-market competition onshore.

Whereas the style of the guest rooms is relatively subdued, the public spaces are about as glitzy as can be. Hanging above the gleaming marble lobby is a crystal celestial orb which sets the tone for all the rest. There’s a similar one in the Sapphire Bar, which with its ambient blue lighting looks a bit like the bar on the starship Enterprise, only fancier and more futuristic. The top-deck Sky restaurant and bar, however, is even more impressive. The restaurant is very much a fine-dining experience, with high-end Mediterranean fare and sea views all around. For travelers who require a good pre-dinner coiffing (or just want a relaxing massage, for that matter), the ship has a full-service spa and beauty salon. It’s all further evidence that Gibraltar is making its bid to become the next Monaco or Cannes.
