We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

For proof that Panama City’s coming boom is as much cultural as economic, look no further than the Tántalo Hotel. It’s located in the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood, a place whose winding streets were laid out some 400 years ago — in the wake of a 17th-century sacking by pirates, it must be said. It may have been then, when Casco Viejo was rebuilt and fortified by the Spanish, that the area last got as significant a facelift as it’s gotten over the past years. What had by the 1990s become a crumbling, graffiti-ridden no-man’s-land is now once again the cultural and artistic center of the city, a popular, graffiti-rich neighborhood full of coffeehouses, art galleries and stylish restaurants.

Tántalo reflects its neighborhood inside and out. The bright yellow stucco and blue trim of the former apartment building’s exterior match the look of an area packed with picturesque neocolonial-style buildings. You’d never know that on the other side of the entrance is a restaurant with long communal tables built with reclaimed wood from the Panama Canal, an art installation made from 983 native Panamanian plants, and a rooftop bar whose patrons compete for attention with views of skyscrapers in one direction and dilapidated church steeples in the other.

And about that rooftop bar: it’s quite a nightlife scene, with music that keeps thumping until the wee hours of the morning, and a crowd that never seems to run out of steam. It’s great fun if you’re up for it, but if you just want a quiet night’s sleep, this probably isn’t the place for you.

At many hotels, public spaces like those would be the stars of the show, but the thirteen guest rooms here are no less a draw. Each one features a different local artist's work. This doesn’t mean a painting here and a knick-knack there. Entire walls are devoted to murals. There are four room categories, all of which include 42-inch plasma TVs, large bathrooms and a kitchenette. A step up from the standard room, the Casco Deluxe includes a private balcony with views of the street, while the Atrium overlooks the restaurant and lounge below. From the Cascos Corner rooms, you can step out onto one of the three private balconies for views of the city — a perfect vantage point from which to admire the new face of this old, only-in-Panama neighborhood.

Please note: Most nights the rooftop bar remains active until quite late at night, with music and conversation audible from the guest rooms.
