The American Colony Hotel is, in some sense, a relic of a more innocent time — it was built in 1860 as a pasha’s palace, with a separate wing for each of his wives. In 1883 a group of American evangelicals bought the palace and founded a religious community, called (naturally) the American Colony, which operated as an orphanage, a clinic, and eventually a hostel.

In later years the hotel has become one of Jerusalem’s finest, a luxurious, old-world affair, and the hotel of choice for visiting foreign journalists and diplomats. It has about it that certain romance associated with the wartime correspondents, and has itself played a part in Israel’s turbulent history — here began the negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians, which eventually led to the signing of 1993’s Oslo agreement.

The location is outside the Old City walls, in Arab East Jerusalem, a short distance from many holy sites, and the shopping district is about ten minutes away. Though the overall atmosphere is one of dignified elegance, there are rooms for every budget and sensibility, from the more modest accommodations in the main building to the more extravagant suites in the additions. This is not to say the main building is devoid of luxury; the Pasha’s own room (Room No. 1) is open to guests, as are those which once housed his wives.

There is a splendid courtyard restaurant, open for all meals, with tropical plants all around, and a gurgling Turkish fountain. Indoors, in a more formal setting, is Arabesque, serving Continental and Arabic dishes (featuring ingredients from the hotel’s own gardens). And of course the cellar bar is the place to mix with foreign correspondents over a glass of whiskey and a cigar.

How to get there: The American Colony Hotel is approximately a 45 minute drive from Ben Gurion International Airport.
