We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

If Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is the last place you’d expect a modern-design boutique hotel like the James, it might be time to check your preconceived notions about Saskatoon. Saskatchewan’s largest city is on the upswing, increasingly regarded as one of Canada’s most livable places and a growing business hub. Case in point: the James, which in spite of its location in a relatively small city is perfectly in tune with the current thinking in urban hospitality, and whose design not only speaks the same language but is actively participating in the same conversation as its counterparts in larger cities.

It helps that it’s not simply a business venture, but a labor of love. The building’s been in the family for generations, and the conversion from condo to hotel was undertaken with the utmost sensitivity — the materials, for example, go far beyond what was strictly necessary to get the job done, leagues apart from any local competition. And yet the family-owned hotel also makes a point of showcasing the surrounding region, with décor inspired by the landscapes of the South Saskatchewan River Valley, furniture fabricated by prairie-based artisans and original works by the best local artists. Not that they’re slavish about it; proper Carrara marble lines the bathrooms.

In this part of Canada, the idea of a design-forward, residential-style boutique hotel is still a relatively novel one, though it may only be a matter of time before the James has some direct local competition. But for now, suffice to say that if this is your kind of hotel when you’re in Shanghai or Stockholm, then this’ll be your place when you’re in Saskatoon.
