We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

We tend to believe that small is beautiful, in hotels at least. And if that’s true, then logically it follows that Mayer Manor is pretty much as beautiful as a hotel can get. It is, after all, that rarest of beasts, the one-room hotel — but to be perfectly fair, this particular hotel would be beautiful at any size.

For one thing, it’s an insanely eclectic space, giving the lie once and for all to the notion that everything Dutch has to be bubbly and futuristic. The building’s rebirth and restoration was inspired by its 19th-century history as well as its pre-history as a 15th-century convent. Today it’s an events space, essentially, and thus designed for maximum atmosphere, maximum romance — and the same goes for its single apartment, spanning the top two floors of the building.

Here the photos more or less speak for themselves. If anything its design seems closer in spirit to cinematic set design than to any identifiable hospitality trends. And the service, such as it is, stays out of your way — the kitchen on the lower level means you’re responsible for your own meals, and the bedroom, all alone on the upper floor, is impervious to the dreaded early-morning housekeeper’s knock. If you value consistency and predictability above all else, then Amsterdam’s got plenty of traditional luxury hotels for you. But if atmosphere and character are your primary concerns, Mayer Manor is impossible to top.

Please note: Mayer Manor’s capacity is two guests, both of whom must be 18 or older. The minimum stay is 2 nights. The apartment is located on the second and third floors of the building, and can only be reached by stairs.
