We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

The Oberoi is regularly mentioned as a contender for the title of best five-star hotel in India. This is a superlative that is not thrown around lightly — they know hotels here, and the best hotel in India would be one of the top hotels in the world. Of course we don't pay much attention to who wins in these sort of polls — what you need to know is that the Oberoi is a stunning example of the sort of old-world luxury India is known for.

New Delhi can be noisy, dingy, chaotic; but the Oberoi is none of these things. The location is peaceful, somewhat secluded, amidst the greens of the Delhi Golf Club and alongside the tomb of the Mughal emperor Humayun. Though very much a city hotel, and quite near the business and commercial districts, the Oberoi is the kind of place you can disappear into — it's an escape from the world, a resort hideaway inside the city limits.

Of course the legendary service contributes to this insulating effect—staffers are among the most attentive and discreet anywhere—but it's also a function of the sheer physical grandeur of the place. Guest rooms, though recently renovated, are elegantly Indian in style, with none of the creeping internationalism that is overtaking the hotels of the world. And the views are breathtaking as well, with the highest rooms offering the broadest possible picture of New Delhi's diverse landscape. Guests here are not likely to awake wondering what country they are in.

As for services, this place has it all, including restaurants (Chinese and Italian as well as World Cuisine), a pool and fitness center, and a Banyan Tree spa. And anything not available within the hotel's four walls can likely be arranged; such is the high standard of Indian hospitality.
