What I liked:

love the location, style, atmosphere and rooms.

What the hotel could do better:

I've stayed here several times and each time the concierge didn't provide the best recommendations. If you don't know NYC well and want a really good concierge to help with your stay, this one isn't as good as others I've experienced. They use a service called Attache for their concierge (which I think is a 3rd party service?) as opposed to having their own in-house concierge. Other than that, love this hotel.

Hotel Description

The thing about a lot of the classic big-city luxury hotels is that they were designed for another era, when lobbies were the size of cathedrals and bathrooms were the size of closets. The very best of them are in a near-constant state of renovation in the race to stay current, but the Quin goes even one step further: they’ve turned the storied Buckingham Hotel — home in times past to the likes of Georgia O’Keeffe and Marc Chagal, plus far too many jazz and classical music luminaries to name — into a brand-new establishment entirely, an all-the-stops modern luxury hotel with a punchy new name to match. From the inside it could easily pass for a new build, and one by a very expensive design team at that. All that’s left of the Buckingham is the iconic beaux-arts architecture, some subtle homages to the hotel’s musical history, and the thing that was always its greatest asset: an address that puts it in what’s essentially the bull’s-eye center of Manhattan, two blocks below Central Park on W. 57th and 6th Avenue.

Where the look is perfectly, tastefully restrained, the materials are about as extravagant as can be: big stone bathrooms with marble vanities, Sferra linens woven in Italy from the finest Egyptian cotton, handmade Duxiana mattresses engineered with the sort of scientific rigor you’d sooner expect applied to a space suit. (Fun fact: a 250-pound wooden dummy named Fingal tests every one of their mattresses by rolling all over it.) There’s even a menu of luxury goods you can order to the room, curated by Bergdorf Goodman. But even if you couldn’t care less about Bergdorf Goodman or the finer points of a Dux mattress versus a Hästens, the result is an extremely comfortable room, where you’re never left wishing the bed were a little firmer, or the shower a little bigger, or the lighting in the bathroom a little better for finding your tweezers.

Given the center-of-the-universe surroundings, the place is remarkably quiet as well. It’s not hard to imagine actually getting some work done — or just getting a good night’s sleep — in one of the guest rooms, though if you wanted to get a little louder, there’s a three-story penthouse here that positively screams for a party. It’s just that none of your neighbors will ever know it’s happening; every room feels as private as can be.

Of course it wouldn’t be a modern luxury hotel without an ambitious and perfectly of-the-moment new restaurant. The Quin has one in the works in the form of the Wayfarer, a seafood-focused restaurant designed to evoke the ambience of an old-fashioned gentleman’s club. Given the New York dining and drinking world’s current obsession with Prohibition-era aesthetics, it’s as current an idea as any, and we’re sure they’ll pull it off with aplomb.
