We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

In a city where a new it-hotel (and -club and -restaurant) seems to get anointed nearly every time the sun sets, the Raleigh pulls off the impossible: it’s positively dripping with nostalgia for Miami Beach’s mid-century golden age, and yet somehow, seventy-plus years on, it remains as hotly of-the-moment as just about any hotel in town. Maybe that’s because, with its eye-popping pool, its iconic Art Deco façade, its gleaming time capsule of a cocktail bar, its breezy oceanside setting, and a collection of throwback guest rooms that keep getting facelifts year after year, it’s pretty much the quintessential Miami Beach hotel.

We’re hardly the first to remark on any of this, by the way. Back in 1947, the Raleigh got a nod from Life magazine, which called the hotel’s pool the most beautiful in America, adding that “in Miami Beach the bathing suit is worn to cocktail parties, lunches, dances, teas and on the street.” Teas presumably notwithstanding, the same holds true today. The Raleigh’s is still arguably the most beautiful pool in America, and the daytime dress code is as scanty as ever. To sit in a parasol-shaded lounger by the water, an icy cocktail in hand, is a pleasure that will never go out of fashion — the cocktails just get better. And when the scene at the pool gets old (and it doesn’t), there’s always the private beach, its rows of chaises longues serviced by waiters who are as quick with an ice-cold towel as they are with snacks from the restaurant.

If you do choose to give up your repose for a meal in the restaurant proper, you’ll find that it combines genuine glamour with a playful dose of kitsch — and food by the James Beard Award–winning Michael Schwartz. Set on the pool deck, it’s populated by beautiful people looking somehow perfectly at home in the vaguely tiki-style setting, with aromatic tropical foliage all around and fat-topped palms swaying above.

You could easily spend a weekend without leaving the grounds, but for a change of scenery, some of the hottest restaurants and clubs in town — including Katsuya by Starck and Hyde Beach — are managed by the same folks who are behind the Raleigh, meaning guests get preferred access. Good company, after all, only multiplies the fun. Or as that Life article put it, “The presence of so many pools, and of so many scantily attired people, all pursuing the common goal of pleasure, is a major factor in giving Miami Beach its atmosphere.” Some things, happily, don’t change.
