Over the past half-century or so Goa has gone from hippie magnet to mass-market beach resort to back-in-vogue tropical hideaway, morphing from one to another to suit the evolving tastes of each generation of pilgrims — but for some 450 years before all that, when Goa was a far-off Portuguese colony, it must have felt a bit like the colonial-style Sofala. It’s not just that the architecture of the twenty-room hotel is Portuguese in style, but that the tranquil seclusion of the place, set between the lushly vegetated banks of a slow-moving river and a set of rolling hills that rises from the paddy fields, creates a distinct feeling of having slipped back in time.

Of course, you don’t want to slip too far. The setting may have the sleepy backwater feel of an earlier era, but the hotel’s fittings are thoroughly contemporary — flat screens, Italian marble baths, quantifiably soft linens and all. A lovely pool, climate control and electric lighting are undoubtedly big improvements, too, though between the famously glowing Goan sunsets and a profusion of candlelight at night, the warm lighting is still pretty classic. And as it turns out, the contemporary earth-toned décor, which is by the local fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani, goes well with the ever-slanted light of India’s west coast.

For all the pleasures of lingering at your quiet colonial hideaway, the beach eventually beckons. When that time comes, it’s a free, five-minute shuttle ride away. North Goa’s restaurants, bars and shops are all in similarly easy reach, while on Thursday evenings, North Goa comes to the Sofala for its popular live jazz performances at the poolside bar. The rest of the week the atmosphere is lower-key, especially in the restaurant, which serves seasonal Goan dishes and wood-fired pizzas.

If poolside jazz performances and a mellow Goan restaurant somehow still sound a bit too raucous, there’s always the Mangrove Villa. With a rooftop pool, a full kitchen and an expansive veranda with views across the river valley, it’s as much of a party as you want to bring to it.
