We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

In a district of London as uniformly posh as Knightsbridge — where everything looks elegant and expensive, lifted, perhaps, out of Woody Allen’s famously rose-colored vision of the city — it’s not easy for a new boutique hotel to stand out. But the Wellesley, opened in December 2012, offers something of a twist: the building is a 1920s townhouse that later functioned as a musical venue, and today the hotel’s design pays homage to both histories. The Wellesley is a glamorous place, very clearly inspired by the Jazz Age, but with a slick contemporary veneer — an aesthetic that, especially considering the Gatsby revivals of late, feels timely — and fresh, too, in a sea of more traditional luxury boutiques.

The Art Deco interiors, recently reworked with ’20s-era design materials faithfully in hand, are sleek but old-fashioned, appropriate to the period: expect a doorman with a top hat guiding you through a lobby with decorative hardwood fixtures, elegant archways, surfaces so gleaming you see your own reflection everywhere, and a high-contrast lighting scheme so dramatic that it feels like it’s always cocktail hour. Guest rooms are almost as opulent, with chic gold and silver-hued décor, marble baths, black and white photos of old-time movie stars, and divans meant for lounging. For true high rollers, there are the penthouse floors, where suites come with contemporary fireplaces and gorgeously equipped dining areas.

Still, if you’re looking to soak up that inter-war mystique, the most atmospheric spots are downstairs — dining at the formal Oval Restaurant, sipping top-shelf cognac in the Crystal Bar, smoking Montecristos in the mirrored, low-lit Cigar Terrace — or, best of all, listening to live music on the grand piano in the swish Jazz Lounge, a fitting tribute to the Wellesley’s artistic past.
