We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

There certainly are worse places to spend the night than at the edge of Louis XIV's Royal Estate, in a palace of cut stone, overlooking the park's lawns and gardens, with a view of the Chateau de Versailles or the Paris skyline. Since opening its doors in 1910, the hotel has hosted the leading figures of government, industry, and culture - the Treaty of Versailles, in fact, was written in its Clémenceau Room.

Some French hotels of such fine historical pedigree might continue to offer the same World War I-era amenities and furnishings. But in 2008, Trianon Palace Versailles was extensively renovated, and the result is, beneath the painstakingly restored surface, a thoroughly modern luxury hotel. And its spacious Versailles location means there is room inside for such luxuries as a heated indoor pool, something that is standard most everywhere else, but quite uncommon in Paris hotels. There is room enough for outdoor tennis courts, complete fitness and spa services, two restaurants (including Gordon Ramsay au Trianon, with its two Michelin stars) and the Gallery bar, as well as no fewer than 19 meeting rooms.

But no matter how palatial the accommodations, the word "Palace" in the hotel's name surely also refers to the Palace at Versailles, the main attraction here. For this is not a commuter hotel, inconveniently remote from the city center, the sort of miserable chain hotel one finds most often nearer the airport than downtown. This is a destination unto itself, not only for the regal treatment it provides its guests, but for its close proximity (five hundred meters!) to the Chateau de Versailles.
