Though the Maldives are not by a long shot the most isolated islands on Earth, there’s something about these perfect, white-sand slivers of beach and these glassy, palm-encircled lagoons that says escape better than just about anywhere else. 250 tropical miles from the Indian coastline, the Maldives feel like the middle of nowhere, and Vagaru Island, at the hardly charted northern end of the chain, feels like the middle of nowhere’s last frontier. It’s here, on this private, 17-acre island at the tip of this smattering of atolls, that Viceroy has built its new resort: 61 villas, half overwater for total immersion, the other half on the beach for land- and sand-lovers.

In a place like this one rather expects the setting to be the star of the show, and with the Viceroy’s understated design featuring glass walls, airy interiors, and subtle use of rustic materials like raw wood and nautical rope, it is; everything draws one back to the sea, sand, and tropical greenery. More surprising are the five restaurants inspired by various stops along the Spice Route, a well-conceived children’s center (think kite-making and kid-safe snorkeling), and a range of activities from catamaran sailing to PADI-certified dive courses to Ayurveda.

Don’t get the wrong idea. The Viceroy Maldives may have as many themed restaurants as an overstuffed mega-hotel on the Vegas strip, but space, privacy, and tranquility reign supreme. The villas, ranging from just over 1,000 to somewhere beyond 4,000 square feet, keep a tasteful distance from one another so guests can use that outdoor shower (standard in every room) without putting on a show for the neighbors.

Maybe you’ll want to try every restaurant and spend action-packed days in the water, but doing nothing at all is a fine choice, too. Each room has a spacious private deck where you can sprawl out on a chaise longue, as well as a plunge pool, should the dozen or so paces to the sea prove too long a walk. And there’s a wi-fi-connected Mac Mini in each room, in case you’re sufficiently bonkers to promise folks back home that you’ll be checking email while in your remote island paradise.
