What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

If you’re hoping to establish yourself in the ultra-competitive New York hotel market, you’d better be sure you make a big splash. It’s apparent from street level that the Viceroy hotel group has taken this principle to heart. Their first offering in the city, the sensibly named Viceroy New York, towers over 57th Street, in Midtown just south of Central Park. It certainly isn’t shying away from the spotlight — and with an exterior that radiates moody industrial cool and interiors by local hospitality design geniuses Roman & Williams, it’s got the substance to back it up.

Thanks to a fortuitous gap in the Midtown skyline, it’s also got park views, from the higher floors, at least — and no matter where you are in the building, your room is easy on the eye. A warm retro-inspired palette and a dedication to the simple forms of modernism result in spaces that feel both reassuringly classic and inspiringly fresh. Space is plentiful, and is made to seem even more so by some clever layouts and wall-spanning windows. And it’s the details that so often separate the major players from the corner-cutters; not to get all Patrick Bateman on you, but linens by Sferra, bath products by Neil George and sound systems by the illustrious Dr. Dre are a clear statement of high-end intent.

A hotel like this needs to make a gastronomic impression as well. To that end, they’ve opened Kingside, a restaurant/bar collaboration between chef Marc Murphy and cocktail wizard Scott Gerber. And soon to open is another New York essential, a rooftop bar — this one featuring dishes and drinks from Kingside, as well as views of Central Park. Essential.
