What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

The Wheatleigh is one of those uniquely American places; an Italianate mansion right in the middle of the Berkshires, once the country house of an American heiress and her husband, a Spanish count, it is now a small château-style hotel, just 19 rooms and suites, with a restaurant that is not to be missed.

Though the exterior is all 1893 Florentine palazzo, the interior shies away from retro-Euro kitsch, thanks to an extensive redesign courtesy of noted New York architects Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown. Mercifully absent are the too-rich fabrics and ostentatious Louis XV furniture one would expect from a lesser designer, replaced by restrained beiges and creams, and furnishings that are subtly modern, never severe. Contemporary artworks hang in place of parodic French portraits, and modern amenities (especially the deep, deep bathtubs) complete the package.

No less striking is the Wheatleigh restaurant, though to crow about the décor would be to miss the point, and badly. The menu is French, though naturally American-influenced, and though far from old-fashioned, it is resolutely unaffected by the trends that sweep through New York on a seasonal basis. The result is a restaurant that is justifiably more famous than the hotel itself – though some Manhattan chefs may dissent, this is quite possibly the best restaurant in the Northeast.

Outside is a park by Frederick Law Olmsted, with beautiful gardens, a swimming pool hidden amidst flowers and pine trees, and a private tennis court. Next door is Tanglewood, where the Boston Symphony makes its summer home, and beyond, the thriving culture of the Berkshires, with museums and galleries to rival those of New York and Boston. In the fall, the leaves change, to dramatic effect, and in winter the Berkshires are blanketed with snow, perfect for skiing or for staying in, in front of a crackling fire.

How to get there:

Wheatleigh is approximately a 2 1/2 hour drive from both New York City and Boston and approximately 1 hour from Bradley International Airport and Albany International Airport.
