Hotel Description

The term “bohemian” in its informal usage derives from bohémien, a word the French used to describe the Gypsy-like artists and free thinkers who entered Western Europe from the Czechoslovakian region of Bohemia, not far from the border of Hungary. So it stands to reason that an arty new boutique hotel in Budapest — a city with arguably more small-b bohemian character than Paris or even Prague — would choose the name as a signifier.

The old printing press that now houses the Bohem Art Hotel has long been associated with counter-culture: in 1944, they produced schutzpasses that protected Jews during World War II. Today, the stakes are rather lower — the place doubles as a contemporary art gallery, and guests are encouraged to choose rooms based on their preference for its paintings. The striking, mostly large-format modern works are indeed the star attractions of each of the sixty rooms and suites, outfitted in a crisp palette of white, charcoal gray and poppy red. They’re divided into a surprising number of categories, with varying square footage and amenities, though many features are standard — parquet floors, LCD televisions, cool white bathrooms, soundproof windows, fast wi-fi. The spacious Loft Suite is ideal for families or small groups, with a sleeping area and bathroom on each level, while the Art & History Suite has old-fashioned arched ceilings that stand in satisfying contrast to the sleek decor and eye-catching artwork.

The Bohem Art Hotel’s public spaces are Instagram-worthy, from the lobby’s sculptural chairs and modern light installation to the Dining Room’s chic champagne breakfast service and glass-encased second-level eating area. There are cocktails and plush magenta armchairs in the bar, and, of course, a showcase of modern Hungarian art throughout. Just outside, Budapest beckons: the city’s great cafés are within easy walking distance, and the shore of the Danube is a block away.
