Hotel Description

Cape Town has no shortage of pretty old houses, thoughtfully restored, transformed into boutique hotels, and given names more easily pronounceable than the original Dutch names — the Three Boutique Hotel, for example, was originally called Schoonder Sigt — but few can match the historic clout of this national monument.

One of ten grand manor houses in the city’s glamorous late 18th-century era, it was originally the home of General Robert J. Gordon, explorer and commander of Dutch forces in South Africa. In addition to making maps and studying languages like Hottentot and Xhosa, Gordon bred Merino sheep and tended to a magnificent garden, inspiring the name of the street — which later inspired the name of the eco-friendly boutique hotel, located at Three Flower Street. The number three also refers to the three iconic sights, namely Table Mountain, Lions Head and Devil’s Peak, visible from the house’s privileged position.

Indeed, the panoramic views, particularly when seen from the rooftop terrace are one of the hotel’s great assets; you’ll also drink in gorgeous scenery, not to mention postcard-worthy views of the romantic old house itself, from the vantage point of the plunge pool and the perfectly manicured garden.

Inside, you’ll find fewer trappings of days gone by. After major renovations by the couple who purchased the property in 2009, the guest rooms are decidedly contemporary, done up in bright white, slate gray and black, with flat-screen TVs and sleek modern baths with rain showers. You’ll see reminders of the original house here and there — in one studio suite, the exposed stone wall is 275 years old — but most of the old-world Cape Town ambience is happening outside on the tiled patios and the picture-perfect lawn. Under the stars, looking out at the mountains, a drink from the honor bar in hand, it’s easy to assume you’ve found the most beautiful spot in the city.
