Hotel Description

Houston's skyline is a collection of sleek glass air-conditioned towers, relics of the 1970s spike in energy prices and the resulting boom for the local petroleum industry. The Magnolia Hotel, by contrast, occupies the old Houston Post-Dispatch building, a 22-story 1920s original and a much more welcoming structure. If those glass towers are still calling you, don't fret, as the Magnolia's rooftop spa boasts a commanding view of the skyline.

Once inside, though, you will realize there's no place you'd rather be; the public spaces are a mix of minimal modern design and a robust Texas-ness expressed in the leather wall panels and the striking maple floor. The guest rooms carry on in the same style, with oversized furnishings filling the oversized spaces and a subtle 1920s influence throughout. Rooms feature cordless phones and high-speed internet, and the massive suites have fully-equipped kitchens. In case you are traveling with an entourage, the Ross Sterling suite on the 22nd floor has multiple bedrooms and bathrooms and enough seating space for a small conference, and comes complete with the services of the hotel's executive chef.

The hotel lacks a restaurant (though its location is convenient to any number of downtown establishments) but it does have a coffee shop and a full room service menu. The Club, on the second floor, is a multi-purpose space comprising an evening bar, a billiards room, and a library, and features wireless internet and a collection of original artworks. The city's commercial district is close at hand, and baseball fans note: the upper floors on the hotel's east side overlook the unfortunately named Minute Maid Park, where the Astros are playing baseball outdoors, on natural grass, for the first time since the 1960s.
