Hotel Description

Hong Kong hotels are no stranger to gilt-edged extravagance; nor are they particularly averse to a bit of beige, businessy sameness. Sometimes the two even coincide. Fair enough, but allow us to present Hullett House: an intimate, ten-suite heritage property in the heart of metropolitan Tsim Sha Tsui with the pedigree and gusto to lay claim to all the charms of Old Hong Kong.

Clad in white stucco, this former Marine Police headquarters bristles with colonial details, its elegant loggias presiding over stately banyan trees and manicured gardens on the opulent, Victorian grounds. But you needn’t approach with reverent trepidation — for all its bygone trappings, the House takes pains to incorporate thoroughly modern comforts into the experience. This is most evident in the bespoke suites, each of which pays homage to a resonant slice of Hong Kong history. The complimentary wi-fi and minibar, rainforest showers with Aromatherapy Associates amenities, flatscreen IPTVs, and Sherwood sound system all nod to the here and now, even as well-preserved period furniture and murals catch the eye. We won’t spoil every last particular here — the surprises are half the fun — but suffice it to say that there’s enough sumptuous, Georgian chinoiserie to rival Brighton’s Royal Pavilion. Okay, we lied; it would be criminal to omit mention of the hand-painted scenes from the Ming and Tang Dynasties, or the bed masquerading as a Confucian temple, or the white-on-white Louis XIV room with a crystal chandelier and decadent ceiling fabrics.

The dining venues, seven in total, continue the historically immersive theme-play. St. George presents contemporary French fine dining in a vaulted, trussed refectory replete with plush velvet and aged leather. Mariners’ Rest retains a whiff of rowdier patrons of yore, slinging draft beer and gastropub staples to a loosened-tie crowd; true mavericks have the option of imbibing within the building’s original jail cells. And Loong Toh Yuen outdoes itself in the dim sum idiom, fully actualizing the character of a ’30s Cantonese teahouse.

Service makes or breaks a hotel, of course, and Hullett House doesn’t disappoint. Butlers and chauffeurs evince a clairvoyant grasp of guests’ needs, be they shopping or sightseeing — yet another rewarding throwback to hospitality standards of decades past. From your era-appropriate sofa on a private balcony overlooking greater Kowloon and the harbor, it’s easy enough to drift into timeless ease. Which is, luckily, the entire point.
