Hotel Description

There’s something undeniably special about staying in a riad, even the most basic ones — something unique and wonderful about leaving the busy streets of the medina and stepping into the quiet central courtyard of a traditional Moroccan house. So when a riad owner has a particular vision for the place, and goes to the extra effort to realize it, the effect can be downright magical. So it is with the new Almaha Marrakech. The inspiration, in this case, was Charles Baudelaire’s poem “L’invitation au voyage” (Invitation to the Voyage) — a poem that evokes, among other appealing sensory images, “comfort and beauty, calm and bliss” and “treasure galore,” “rarest blooms” and “amber-like perfumes.”

Sounds about right. Tucked away in the former royal stables of the Kasbah, the oldest and most important section of the city, the hotel is an otherworldly place. Like many other riads in Marrakech, it’s grand and opulent, decorated with traditional tiles, carved wood, and glass lanterns hand-crafted by artisan guilds that have been working in the neighborhood for a thousand years. And the riad centers around an open-air courtyard, as is standard. But the architecture at the Almaha is particularly dramatic and striking, with rows of high white columns and arches mirrored by the courtyard’s reflective basin. Gorgeous details abound, from glowing candles and exotic topiary to diaphanous drapery and lush plants practically spilling over the second-level balconies. It’s all the work of a single designer, Charles Kaisin, who’s created some extraordinary spaces and effects — the “Pixels” lounge depicts an image of the iconic Jemaa el Fna square, made from thousands of silk-padded blocks — and integrated recurring references to the Baudelaire poem throughout the riad’s interiors.

Heavy cedar doors open into the hotel’s suites, each spacious and sumptuously outfitted with a marble bath and fireplace, the floors heated from underneath. Each is a bit different: some have cozy reading alcoves, others have civilized seating areas, and many feature private patios or terraces. All have modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and complimentary wi-fi. Not that you’ll want to spend much time checking your mail when there’s a spectacular hammam — a serene subterranean spa lined with hand-painted tiles, an absolute feast for the eyes — awaiting down a flight of stairs. The hotel also features a lovely rooftop terrace with views over the walled city. There’s a small swimming pool that’s ideal for a dip on a hot day, but the real pleasure is to sit up here with a glass of mint tea at dawn or dusk, hearing the prayer calls ringing out, the minarets in stark silhouette against the sky. “Luxury, peace, and pleasure,” to quote Baudelaire.
