Hotel Description

The atmosphere of Riad El Mezouar is about as classic as they come in the world of Marrakech medina riad hotels: brilliantly hued, faultlessly ornate, and mercifully sequestered from crowds and the midday sun alike, it may very well qualify for the dictionary definition. Of course, classic doesn’t just happen by accident — its owner clearly put some effort into crafting its interiors, renovating a grand and well-preserved 18th-century mansion, part of the former royal palace complex, with an eye towards keeping many of the original architectural details intact.

At just five rooms, El Mezouar was clearly earmarked for intimacy from the jump, each of which subtly riffs on traditional Moroccan visual cues without straying overmuch from a tried-and-true blend of white plaster arches, earth-tone textiles, and finely wrought metal accents. There's intimacy, too, in the vibrant hospitality — expect hot water bottles to warm your bed, rose petals to scent your bath, and a cornucopic flow of tea, coffee, wine, fruit, and nuts as proof of the proprietor's keen gift for welcome.

You're not just another face, in other words, and you should expect a face-to-face discussion of your needs in order to make the most of things. Outstanding Moroccan cuisine is available on request, for instance, pairing hearty spiced portions with a fireplace-equipped salon to take the edge off the evening chill. You'll likely end up sunning and splashing in the courtyard pool, or blissing out on the rooftop terrace whilst taking in views of the city and the Atlas mountains; the latter comes particularly recommended with breakfast among lush greenery and decorative urns in peach and turquoise. Attaining that level of serenity isn't just possible around here — it's fully encouraged. You won't need to say much when the décor's sinuous, woozy patterns start to speak to you.

How to get there: Riad El Mezouar is 22 minutes by car from Marrakech-Menara International Airport.
