Hotel Description

You don’t have to stay on Ocean Drive to get the complete Miami Beach experience. In fact, though it’s easy enough to be hypnotized by the parade of models and millionaires — whether actual or aspiring — it’s important to remember that, a block or two inland, you’ll find the slightly more grown-up and discreet side of Miami Beach, where the Hotel Astor makes its home.

The hotel itself dates back to 1936, and is an original Art Deco masterwork. Though by law the exterior remains the same as it ever was, the interiors have been subtly updated. Art Deco is back in style, after all (though of course it was never out of style around here), and the modern elements are minimal, keeping out of the way, serving merely to update the look, and unify what had become a mish-mash of different eras and styles of interiors.

Though discreet and a bit on the quiet side, the Astor has its share of attractions — the Astor Social Club, one of Miami Beach’s more prestigious nightspots, is certainly enough to draw a highly desirable crowd. But this is not one of those hotels where the nightclub takes center stage, with the guest rooms seemingly an afterthought, or merely an afterparty venue. The Astor is, we are happy to say, a proper hotel, providing service and comfort first (though in impeccable style) and nightly entertainment as a bonus.

The double-insulated guest rooms and the private pool-club ambience make staying in attractive, but there’s plenty to do in Miami Beach. Innumerable bars and restaurants line the beach, and Miami’s status as America’s second city of fashion means the shopping is world-class. Travelers on a budget, though, will be delighted to note that Miami Beach is unrivalled as a venue for at least one free pastime — the people-watching is extraordinary. And you don’t even need to stroll down Ocean Drive to partake; given the Astor’s clientele, the hotel lobby has some of the best seats in town.
