Hotel Description

Tulum’s nightlife may never be the equal of Mallorca’s or Miami’s, but certainly it says something that one of the better hotels in Tulum is also home to what might be the town’s liveliest party. Each Friday, Fiesta en la Playa brings a DJ — sometimes from Mexico, sometimes from Europe or the U.S. — to Mezzanine, and it’s at this nine-room boutique hotel in a once-sleepy fishing village, of all places, that they spin house music until 2:30 in the morning for a crowd that’s very much up for it.

Clearly, if you’ve come to Tulum for some restful quiet, this isn’t necessarily the hotel for you, at least on a Friday night. But if you want a small-scale, thatch-roofed sort of place that offers some proper Caribbean lazing by day — and no question, the sand on Mezzanine’s beach is about as soft and white as it gets, the warm water see-to-the-bottom clear — followed by a nighttime atmosphere that revolves around the beachside cocktail bar, Mezzanine hits the right notes. The hotel claims to have a “hipster vibe,” which is true enough if we take “hipster” to mean, simply, the sort of person who requires something a little more off-piste than Cancún, and who, to put a finer point on it, hasn’t yet retired to something as off-off-piste as, say, the quietude of the Maldives.

In case a hotel with a pronounced social side brings to mind some sort of bare-bones hostel, know that the rooms, especially above the entry level, are spacious and full of perfectly grown-up furnishings. For some detox, the master suite has a tub that looks like a big white boulder, split in half and hollowed for your soaking-pleasure, not to mention the viewing-pleasure of whoever’s in the bedroom. (The tub is on full display.)

And let’s not forget that, for all the resort-style lounging and imbibing on offer, Mezzanine is still in Tulum. That puts it within easy range of all the snorkeling, kayaking, kite-surfing, jungle-exploring, cenote-swimming and, of course, Mayan ruin–hopping that anyone could want. For in the end, any hotel can pull off a proper dance-party with a bit of effort, but there’s only one stretch of the Riviera Maya, with that ancient walled city perched atop a beachside cliff, that’s quite like this.
