That’s a demographic that’s not always known for being on the stylistic cutting edge, but the Sydney takes a classic whaling captain’s house, marries it to a second, brand-new structure, and presents itself to the world as a thoroughly contemporary boutique hotel.

The location is central, on compact Edgartown’s tony North Water Street, two blocks from the water’s edge. The newer building contains 14 rooms, decorated in a colorful contemporary style with just the right amount of Victorian influence — they feel like nothing else on the island, but they still feel like they belong. Meanwhile the Captain’s House is scarcely more traditional, its Colonial Revival architecture contrasting vividly with modern colors and bold patterns.

Also in the Captain’s House, on the ground floor, is the Sydney’s restaurant, the delightful L’Etoile, owned and operated by chef Michael Brisson. It’s not just a “hotel restaurant” but a local favorite as well, though it’s far from the only game in town — Edgartown is extremely walkable, and there’s plenty to see and do within a short walk from the hotel’s front door.

Deposit A deposit equal to the first 3 nights lodging, or 50% of any stay longer than 6 nights, is required to guarantee reservations. The balance is due on arrival. Payment can be made with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club or Discover. Cancellation Policy Because of our size and market, cancellations affect us significantly. Please note our firm cancellation policy guidelines below. With 21 days* or more notice prior to your confirmed arrival: Any cancellations (including a shortening of stay) will be charged a 20% cancellation fee. If the reservation is cancelled completely, the cancellation fee will equal 20% of the deposit. If shortening the stay, the fee will equal 20% of the room rate for the night(s) canceled. Shortening of a stay must still meet any minimum stay requirements. Any change of dates will be charged a change of dates fee equal to 10% of deposit. With 20 days* or less notice prior to your confirmed arrival: Deposits become non-refundable for any cancellations (including shortening of stay). Deposits become non-refundable for any change of dates. However, a one-time change is permitted, and a change of dates fee equal to 25% of deposit will be charged for this service. This means that 75% of the deposit paid can be applied to a future reservation, subject to availability, future rates, and any minimum stay restrictions. After check-in, any shortened stays will remain charged in full per the original reservation. Travel Insurance We realize that cancellations are often beyond your personal control. For this reason, we recommend purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind. The Sydney will be happy to supply your travel insurance company with any needed documentation regarding our policy and your reservation. For insurance information please visit www.insuremytrip.com. Maximum Room Occupancy Most of our hotel rooms are limited to a maximum occupancy of two total people of any age, including infants. (Our rooms do not accommodate cribs, pack ‘n plays, or roll-away beds.) We have two suites (the Lark Suite and the Sydney Suite) that offer pull-out sofas and can accommodate up to four (4) people each—extra guests beyond two will be charged a fee of $50/person (including children). If you're traveling with children, family, or a larger party, we're happy to book multiple rooms for your stay if available, or recommend our sister property on Martha's Vineyard, Summercamp in Oak Bluffs, which offers some larger rooms and suites that can accommodate up to 6 guests. Accessibility Our hotel offers (1) fully ADA accessible guest suite — the Lark Suite, available to book online or by phone. Please see the accessibility page of our website to learn more. Pets and Service Animals While we welcome Service Animals, unfortunately, pets, including emotional support animals, are not permitted at our hotel. We are happy to recommend nearby kennels for use during your stay. Check-in and Check-out Times Check-in is possible anytime after 3:00 pm. To access the door to the Original Captain House rooms at The Sydney, head up the ramp located on the side of Winter Street. If you are arriving after 10:00 pm, your key and check-in instructions will be located at the front desk. Parking Most people choose not to bring a car to the Island, but if you do, please note that The Sydney offers very limited on-site parking. The hotel has 4 guaranteed parking spots available for $40/night. Guests interested in reserving a guaranteed parking spot for use during their stay must call the hotel directly to inquire about availability. We are a Smoke-Free Hotel The Sydney is a 100% non-smoking property. A $250.00 cleaning surcharge will be imposed to any room where guests have smoked with disregard for our policy. Guest Responsibility While accidents do happen, guests will be financially responsible for damage due to gross negligence. Alcohol Policy While we do not sell alcohol on the premises, guests must be 21 years of age or older to consume alcohol. As our common spaces are used by all guests, we ask everyone to drink responsibly and be considerate of others around them.
