Here's our top 5 Shoreditch London boutique hotels:

CitizenM London Shoreditch

CitizenM's formula makes good sense just about anywhere it's been tried, from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport to New York's Times Square. But it's perhaps nowhere so desperately needed as in London, a city whose legendarily expensive real estate means legendarily expensive hotels. It's no coincidence, then, that the English capital is now home to no fewer than three: and the third, CitizenM London Shoreditch, takes on what might still be London's most boutique-hotel-hungry neighborhood.

CitizenM London Shoreditch – Boutique Hotel in Shoreditch, London

It's the ideal location for a design-conscious and budget-friendly hotel like this, as an enormous amount of London's creative work goes on within a half-mile or so of this spot. Modern furniture, minimalist design, a self-serve communal lobby café, and affordable, efficient rooms are just what East London's creative class ordered. The rooms are high-tech and manage to squeeze maximum comfort out of modest space — good old Dutch design saves the day again.

Ace Hotel London Shoreditch

What does the Ace hotel group know about London? Not much more than a particularly keen American visitor can pick up. So for this, their first overseas hotel, they've done the sensible thing and enlisted an all-star cast of East End locals, all the better to tailor the experience to the location. The result is that same easy Ace cool, along with authentic London roots that are far more firmly established than you'd expect from an American upstart. It's fair to expect that the Ace Hotel London Shoreditch will become the unofficial home of the East London creative class.

Universal Design Studio knows the neighborhood well — they're located about three streets to the west — and they've masterfully translated the Ace's vintage-Americana look into something a bit more urban. 20th-century vintage furnishings decorate the loft-like spaces, and where an American Ace opts for a wool army blanket, these beds are dressed in custom duvets by the French brand APC. The rooms are smart, well-lit, and in terms of comforts, they're excellent value for the money.

Boundary London

The outer frontier of London's hospitality world moves inexorably eastward — we fully expect some future Tablet incarnation to beam news of a desperately hip boutique hotel somewhere in the North Sea directly to your cerebral cortex. That day's a long way off, alas — for now Shoreditch, and Terence and Vicki Conran's Boundary London, is far enough east for most of us.

Boundary London – Boutique Hotel in Shoreditch, London

With three restaurants serving some twelve rooms and five suites, Boundary's got the ratio just about right — one a proper fine dining establishment; one a vista-rich rooftop grill, protected from the weather and open year-round; and one a bakery and "caff," open from eight in the morning until late in the evening, providing fuel for your daily expeditions. Shoreditch is gallery central, home to some innovative small retail, and the ever-increasing density of restaurants and bars shows why three is the right number for Boundary.

Nobu Hotel Shoreditch

Nobu is better known in London for its standalone restaurants than for its hotels, but with the advent of the Nobu Hotel Shoreditch, that might be about to change. On the back of successful hotel openings in Asia and the Americas, the famous sushi concern has chosen London's hottest neighborhood for its first European hotel, and the result is more or less exactly what you'd predict — which, in Nobu's case, is a good thing indeed.

Nobu Hotel Shoreditch – Boutique Hotel in Shoreditch, London

The building, a new build, is equal parts industrial patina and inventive contemporary construction, and the rooms are distinctive, steering well clear of all the London lodging clichés, taking their inspiration from Shoreditch street art and traditional Japanese design. They start out smallish but impeccably composed — they've been likened to bento boxes more than once — but the suites offer room to spread out if you're willing to splash out.
